What is our Soul Purpose?
Your soul purpose is your greater purpose in life, often described as your destiny, soul mission, or higher calling. It involves using your unique gifts and talents to serve both yourself and others, contributing to the world in a way that resonates with your true self. Understanding your soul purpose can lead to intrinsic happiness and motivation, as it aligns with your personal values and passions. Ultimately, it is not necessarily defined by your work or career, but is represented by an inner light that guides you.
Our soul connects Spirit with our Personality in this incarnation. Our soul knows the themes of its desires and goals it has striven to achieve in various lifetimes. The soul has great inner wisdom that requires respect and understanding. This requires piercing the veil of illusion and digging deep into our heart and inner wisdom to discover what is of importance to the soul to achieve in this lifetime.
Whether your desire to find your Soul purpose is due to a sudden spiritual awakening, fortuitous synchronicity, or turbulent dark night of the soul, it is a call to adventure. It may or may not take you time to discover it, but the journey itself can be a fascinating exploration.
Astrology and your birth chart
Often, general clues to your soul mission can be found in your birth zodiac information – your sun sign, and the planets and houses’ positions at the time of your birth. Birth charts or natal astrology may reveal your blueprint for potential and personality. We are influenced at the time of our birth with the positions of the planets, star systems and zodiac houses that set our course in life. However, it is continually influenced by the motion of planets through that blueprint that continue to shape our daily life and the choices we make. Explore your astrological birth chart for clues. Explore your inner self
The first step requires looking deeper, you need to excavate your best skills. You came into this life with deep passions and developed skills around those passions, that are meant to help you achieve your mission. Your soul knows this, now your conscious mind needs to grasp this information from your subconscious so that you can “get on the same page” with your soul to manifest your soul purpose. It’s almost like an archeological treasure hunt you are going on!
This involves creating space for introspection and quieting the mind through practices like meditation, journaling, and mindfulness. By going within and listening to your inner voice, you can begin to uncover the desires, dreams, and passions that align with your soul’s calling. Daily practices such as meditation help to quiet the noise of the mind and allow you to connect with your higher self. This connection is essential for understanding your true nature and the unique gifts that you are meant to share with the world.

Identify your Passions and Gifts
Here are some ideas of what to start looking for to excavate important clues to your soul purpose:
Your personality is the topsoil of your life – the face you present to the world. We are so much more than our outer personality, we have core values, gifts, and inner wisdom that are our foundation. Your unique gifts and passions are clues to your soul’s purpose. Spend time reflecting on what brings you joy, excitement, and fulfillment. What activities make you lose track of time? What do you love doing, even if it doesn’t bring you money or recognition? These passions and interests are often indicators of your true calling. It is important to remember that your soul’s purpose is unique to you. Only you can fulfill this purpose, as it is a reflection of your true self and the light you are meant to bring into the world.
- Core Values or what principles we hold onto so firmly at our center that they are absolutely non-negotiable– we could never abandon them.
- Core Gifts or the natural talents and abilities we were born with that contribute to our Soul’s maturation and that we are exceptionally good at.
- Core Wisdom or the mysterious knowledge we know without knowing how – most intuition comes from this core wisdom that we’re born to manifest.
- Core Joys – what brings you joy? Joy is the highest frequency of the heart and is important in our ascension and moving into our higher potential. Be on the lookout for those little things that bring you joy – they are clues.
- Your Heart’s Desires – if you stop and listen to the voice of your heart and you ask the question – What do you desire? Listen for the immediate response. Listen often.
These gifts, desires, and values can be explored with meditation, visionary journeys, journaling, and practicing self-observation. In meditation you can connect to your Higher Self, or other spirit guides that are working with you, that can help you discover this information. While you are exploring – keep these qualities in mind to cultivate during your exploration:
- Honesty– focus on being honest with yourself, be truthful
- Gratitude– attune to what you are thankful for in life, this will help to open your heart, which is the gateway to your Soul
- Openness– be willing to invite in new experiences
- Trust– learn to trust your insights and discoveries

Find Stillness, Silence, Solitude, and Nature
Exercise – Finding Your Soul Purpose
Have a piece of paper and pen ready for this next exercise. You can ask your guides, and inner intuitive wisdom, to answer these four questions. Go with the immediate response that comes to you – whether it is just a single word, an image that comes to mind, or a feeling you get. Ask each question in that manner and don’t overthink it, and write the responses down.
What am I supposed to do with my life?
What do I most enjoy doing?
How can I best shine my light while I’m alive?
What do I want to contribute to the world?
When you’re done, reflect upon what you have received. Even if it doesn’t make sense to you right now, it will later!
Overcome Fear and Limiting Beliefs
Fear and limiting beliefs are common obstacles on the path to discovering your soul purpose. These fears often stem from societal conditioning, past experiences, or the ego’s need for security and approval.
However, to live in alignment with your soul’s purpose, you must learn to choose love over fear and embrace your truth. Overcoming these fears involves shifting your focus from external validation to inner fulfillment. It requires cultivating self-love, confidence, and trust in the universe.
Explore Yourself through Art
Art is the expression of the artist’s overflowing soul. – Hans Hofmann
Symbols, images, metaphors, dreams, and sensations are the primary ways the Soul ‘talks’ to us – and art helps us to directly tap into and interpret this inner wisdom! You don’t have to have a single artistic bone in your body to use art as a doorway to your Soul successfully. Even a stick figure or a squiggle can carry tremendous meaning and value. You can create a vision board, write in a journal, automatic writing, paint, draw, watercolor, sculpt, make a symbolic nature collage that speaks to your joys. Just let yourself express what you feel inside. Then stop to reflect on what’s in front of you. What feelings do you get from the image? What do the shapes or colors mean to you? Amazing realizations can occur when you take the time to contemplate your drawings.
Be Patient with your Exploration
Any treasure worth finding will take some degree of sincere effort. But along the way, it will teach you so much about yourself – and the path is just as important as the destination in the end.
Why Discovering Your Soul Purpose Matters
Living in alignment with your soul purpose can transform your entire human experience. When you are aligned with your soul’s calling, you experience a greater sense of fulfillment, joy, and peace. Your actions feel meaningful, and you feel connected to something larger than yourself — the universe. This sense of connection brings about a deep sense of self-love, self-expression, and spiritual growth. However, when you are not living in alignment with your soul’s purpose, you may feel stuck, lost, or dissatisfied. You may find yourself chasing after goals or desires that, while seemingly significant, do not bring lasting happiness or fulfillment. When you align with love and authenticity, you create the space for your soul to shine and express its true purpose.
Follow Your Intuition and Listen to the Universe
Your intuition is a powerful tool for discovering your soul’s purpose. It is the inner guidance system that helps you navigate your path and make decisions that are aligned with your highest self. Learning to trust and follow your intuition can lead you to opportunities, experiences, and people that support your spiritual journey. The universe is always providing signs, nudges, and guidance toward the right path. Be open to receiving these signs and listen to the whispers of your soul. The answers you seek often lie within, waiting to be discovered.
Take Inspired Action and Embrace the Journey
Once you have gained clarity on your soul purpose, it is important to take inspired action towards it. This may involve making small changes in your daily routine, pursuing a passion, or stepping out of your comfort zone. Remember, discovering your soul’s purpose is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the process with an open heart, and trust that every step you take is leading you closer to your true calling. Allow yourself to explore, play, and create without judgment. The more you align with your soul purpose, the more your life will begin to flow with ease, joy, and abundance.
Meditation for Exploring Your Soul’s Qualities
One of the best meditations I have found for exploring your soul’s qualities is the Exploring Your Heart Sanctuary meditation. I have this meditation on my YouTube channel: Nancy Robbins – Elements Design Collection. Your heart sanctuary is a “room” in your heart that holds your soul qualities and wisdom. In this space you can explore your soul’s qualities, and connect to your Higher Self and other guides for guidance. You can also have your Higher Self guide you to the next highest aspect of yourself that you are ready to become!
EXPLORING YOUR HEART SANCTUARY MEDITATION
To begin – Allow yourself to sit quietly and calm your mind and emotions and close your eyes. Imagine that you have a volume knob on your mental chatter and you are turning it down to zero. Imagine that you also have a volume knob on your emotional noise, and you turn that down to zero. Relax your muscles and feel all your tension draining away. Feel that everything is settling down and draining out your feet. You can imagine that your body turns into light particles and fizzes up into the air. Allow yourself to settle into stillness and feel deep relaxation and peace.
Entering Your Heart Sanctuary to explore:
Place your focus on your heart with the intention of connecting to the sacred space within your heart. You may have a sensation of moving deep within, and know that your intention will connect you to this sacred space. A trail of white light appears before you – you follow that trail of light until you come to a stop at a door of light. You step through this door into a room.
This room may be an outdoor room or an indoor room. This is your sacred space that no other guide can enter unless invited. If you need more light in the room to see it by just ask for light to increase within the space. This is your sacred space that holds your soul’s deepest desires and your soul’s divine essence, that will inform you on your life purpose and bring you important information for your healing and transformative development. Be a neutral witness as you take a look around and witness the details and qualities of the space, as if you walked into another person’s home, and you took a look at the space to gain clues on its occupant.
What colors do you see? Are there any particular sounds? What is the style or architecture of the space? If is an outdoor space, what type of landscape is it? What feelings do you sense here? Are there any specific aromas? Are there any people, animals, or other beings here? Do they have any messages or gifts for you? Are there windows and other doors? How are the elements of earth, fire, water, air, and ether represented here? Does this room denote any specific function or multiple functions? How do the details of this room inform you of your essence – the core of your nature? How does this inform you of your heart’s passions? How does this describe your inner divine spiritual skills? How does this describe your beauty? When you see this essence of you, what particular color or colors symbolize it?
Now slowly take your focus and with your lens of vision ‘pan-out’ pulling your awareness out to where you are looking at your physical outer self. How do you see this essence expressed in your physical appearance? This is what reflects your ‘beauty’ – a reflection of your essence found in your heart. Wearing the color or colors you found within, and understanding your beauty, will help to emphasize your own expression of your unique self. Value this special uniqueness and beauty. Do not try to compare your beauty to others, or follow some prescribed form of beauty that society dictates. Beauty is a unique expression of each individual’s essence and truth, which is why beauty is so highly valued and sought after. Therefore, beauty is different with each individual and can be appreciated in that way. Know and appreciate your own particular beauty as an expression of your soul.
You can return your awareness to your present state of being now, or you can extend your visit to include any of the following options:
- Invite your Higher Self in this space and to ask for guidance
- Invite your Higher Self to elevate you to the next highest aspect you are ready to become
- Invite a spirit guide (ascended master, angel, nature spirit, ancestor, star being, loved ones that have passed) to give you a message/gift that will provide you guidance/healing
- Explore the upstairs of your Heart Sanctuary.
Invite your Higher Self for guidance:
Ask your Higher Self to join you in your Heart Sanctuary. Your Higher Self knows all of your past life experiences, your skills, gifts, and your life purpose for this lifetime, and has your best interest in mind. You can ask your Higher Self for any messages of guidance that are important for you now, or any questions that you are seeking guidance for. Ask your Higher Self to help you create a strong connection with clear communication between you. Create a close connection, and receive impressions with any of these clair-senses: clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing), clairsentience (clear feeling), claircognizance (clear knowing), clairalience (clear smelling), clairgustance (clear tasting). When you have finished communicating with your Higher Self – give thanks.
Invite your Higher Self to elevate you to your higher potential:
Ask your Higher Self to join you in your Heart Sanctuary and they will elevate you – as if you were in an elevator – up to the level of your Higher Self that you are now ready to BE – that is physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually compatible for you. Imagine you are going up in the “elevator” that your guide is controlling. The elevator will stop at the appropriate floor. When the elevator stops – exit and on this platform the aspect of your Higher Self that you are ready to become is waiting for you there. How do they look or feel different from your current self? Do they have a message for you? See yourself stepping closer to this aspect. Do you notice anything else? Now merge with this aspect and you are both now one. You now have accessed their qualities. What have you received? Thank your Higher Self.
Invite a Spirit Guide into your Heart Sanctuary:
Ask a Spirit Guide to enter your Heart Sanctuary – they can be an ascended master, angel, nature spirit, star being, or ancestor. This spirit guide approaches you now and stands before you. You can ask the guide to identify itself to you. The guide has a gift to give you along with a message that will support you in the best way for this moment. Receive the gift and message and take in its meaning with your impressions. You can ask further questions and receive guidance. Thank your guide.
Explore Higher Levels of your Heart Sanctuary:
You can invite a spirit guide into your Heart Sanctuary to explore higher floors, or go by yourself. Ask the guide to now lead you up to the higher level of your heart sanctuary. You and your guide now do so – it is up to your imagination how both of you do that. See the two of you moving up to this higher level – which is a higher dimension within your heart. Notice what this place looks like – take in the details. Notice what opportunities immediately are discovered here – the potential of this higher level. Take a few moments to look around. There are many explorations and discoveries to be made on this new higher level. Converse with your guide about this higher level and thank your guide when you are finished exploring.
