Sugar and Spirituality

by Nancy Robbins

Sugar in spiritual terms embodies the essence of pleasure and gratification, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the joy derived from experiences that satiate our senses.  The consumption of sugar is often associated with celebrations and special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and religious festivities, serving as a reminder of the good times and happiness.  It is a treat that brings immediate gratification and pleasure.  It is also a symbol of the blissful state that comes from inner peace and spiritual growth.  It symbolizes abundance, prosperity, success, blessings, positivity, and good fortune.  It symbolizes love, affection, and the tender, compassionate side of human nature.  It symbolizes energy, vitality, enthusiasm, nurturing comfort, and joy.  It is a symbol of reward and an offering of love and gratitude.  It is an alluring and desirous attraction.  Sugar, in its essence, encourages us to appreciate the small, sweet moments of joy in life, but also to understand their fleeting nature.

Reduce and find balance…

As with all good things, sugar consumption must come in balanced moderation, lest we become addicted to sugar.  Consuming too much sugar harms the body, brain, and spirit.  It leads to weight gain, mood swings, energy crashes, inflammation in the body, spikes insulin levels, causes fuzzy brain, exhausts the adrenal glands, can lead to life-threatening illnesses like diabetes, and most importantly – it calcifies the pineal gland.

The pineal gland …

Sugar not only inhibits the healthy functioning of the pineal gland, it shuts it down.  The pineal gland, the small pinecone shaped structure nestled between the brain’s two hemispheres, is known as the “master gland,” the “spiritual antenna,” the “seat of the soul,” and the “third eye,” because it’s been said to provide us visibility into higher levels of consciousness.  The pineal gland is the seat of spirituality in the body because of its production of DMT, the biological elixir that allows for spiritual awakening.   The pineal gland produces the hormone melatonin, a derivative of serotonin that influences our patterns of sleeping and waking.

When we are children, our pineal glands are open and as we age, they begin to calcify or shut down as a result of exposure to toxins and excessive quantities of certain hormones.  Refined sugar causes the toxicity and hormone imbalance that shuts down the pineal gland.  Along with alcohol, meat, fish, and fluoride, it creates excess acidity in the body, forcing your system to draw nutrients out of its tissues in an attempt to balance its PH.  Overly acidic body pH accelerates the build-up of calcium phosphate crystals around the pineal gland that settle like a hard shell, literally blinding the third eye.  Sugar also increases epinephrine output, which causes dysfunction in the pineal gland by interfering with its natural production of melatonin.  (Tips on de-calcifying the pineal gland will be a later article.)

Eliminating as much sugar as possible from your diet is one of the most important things you can do for the clarity and health of your “third eye,” your physical health, and your spiritual connection.  As we have mentioned, sugar symbolizes so much joy, loving comfort, abundance, and positivity in our life – that we don’t want our life to be devoid of those qualities.  So, we need to find substitutes – or to be truthful – make a more direct connection to all that joy.

I’ll admit that I have a sweet tooth myself, and I want it in my life, but I have been cutting way back on sugar wherever I can.  This calls for really looking at food labels because sugar is put into just about everything, whether it needs it or not!  In general, all processed foods are questionable and not just because of the sugar, but the GMO and toxic ingredients.  When you shop at the grocery store, try staying in the outer ring of the store with all the fresh ingredients, and especially organic (even though that is suspect sometimes!), and steer away from processed foods.

Discovering Joy and Celebration in life

So, when we reach for sugar, it is usually in celebration of the sweetness in life, OR for the emotional comfort due to the lack of the sweetness in life.  Ask yourself then, what other ways can you celebrate the joy in your life??  Do you even celebrate important moments in your life?  Can a healthier food choice serve as a substitute in celebrating?  Is there an activity that is celebratory instead of sugary food – games, dancing, singing, a special night out, a vacation, a party?  Besides finding a substitute for a special celebration – it’s celebrating life every day by appreciating the small daily pleasures that add up to a bounty of goodness in your life.  For me, beauty is equal to sugar.  Beauty in nature is endless – colorful flowers, trickling streams, a lovely forest, an aqua ocean, sunsets, starry nights, and in loving interactions, in your pet that welcomes you home, a child’s handmade gift, a birthday card!  It’s looking for the little things in life that bring a smile, thrill your heart, those “ah” moments.  Those are the sweetness in life.  Find them and keep them close to your heart.

Release suppressed or blocked emotions …

The other side of the coin is, are you lacking sweetness in your life?  Is this coming from suppressed or blocked emotions that are causing discontentment and anxiety?  I feel that emotions – “energy in motion” – need to flow like a fountain.  Your heart needs to receive a full reserve of love in order to fountain joyfully and lovingly to share with others in the world.  Are you nurturing yourself with love and appreciation, or are you being too self-judgmental?  How can you be kind and nurturing to yourself?  Be a good mother to your inner child.  If your emotions are blocked, they become stagnant and toxic.  Let your emotions flow – experience them and let them go.  Don’t hang on to grudges, bitterness, hatred, suspicion, heartache, and the like.  Process them and let them go.  Receive what you can learn from the experience, and lighten the load so that you can feel buoyant joy in your life again.  Your heart is purified in this way of heavy negative emotions, and you allow the sweetness of life and love into your life.  This is also necessary for your ascension path.

Meditation and making your spiritual connection …

The pineal gland is all about seeing with a higher perspective and spiritual connection.  Meditation can bring you into a wonderful state of bliss, as well as provide great insight into your authentic self, and spiritual guidance from your Higher Self or spirit guides.  I find visualizations and meditations are like an exciting journey I can take to new lands of beauty, joy, and wonder.  By connecting to my Higher Self, spirit guides, and the spirits of crystals, I have been shown a lot about who I really am, what my mission is here, how I can contribute and be of service, what my gifts are, and so much more.  These things bring bliss, confidence, understanding, enlightenment, excitement, support, inspiration, love, and magic into my life – and definitely sweetens my life!!!

I have many meditations on my website, and some will soon be on YouTube.  These guided meditations will help you sweeten your life and bring real meaning and understanding of your authentic self, your life purpose, and contribute wonder, joy, and sweet bliss to your life!
