The Council of Discernment

The Council of Discernment

by Nancy Robbins

Introduction:

This meditation introduces a Council of Discernment—a symbolic inner council designed to help you listen to different forms of information before making an important decision.

You are the Sovereign. Your advisors may offer feelings, body sensations, intuition, logic, external information and independent verification, timing, and consequences. Two attendants—the Protector and Mirror of Self-Knowledge—help safeguard your autonomy and self-awareness.

No advisor is automatically right. No advisor makes the decision for you. The purpose of the Council is not to make every voice agree, but to allow different perspectives to question and challenge one another.

And remember: agreement isn’t automatically confirmation. If several advisors seem to agree, you can ask whether they are responding independently—or whether they are all being influenced by the same fear, desire, assumption, or incomplete information.

You may choose YES, NO, or WAIT. Waiting is not failure. “I don’t know yet” can be a wise and sovereign decision.

You don’t need perfect certainty. You need the willingness to listen, question, verify, and choose.

You are the Sovereign. The Council advises. You decide.

Introduction to Meditation

This meditation introduces a Council of Discernment—a symbolic inner council designed to help you listen to different forms of information before making an important decision.  You are the Sovereign. Your advisors may offer feelings, body sensations, intuition, logic, external information, timing, and possible consequences. If several advisors seem to agree, you can ask whether they are responding independently—or whether they are all influenced by the same fear, desire, assumption, or incomplete information.  You may choose YES, NO, or WAIT. Waiting is not failure. “I don’t know yet” can be a wise and sovereign decision.  You don’t need perfect certainty. You need the willingness to listen, question, verify, and choose.  You are the Sovereign. The Council advises. You decide.

Before we enter the Council, there are a few principles to remember.

First: Calm before conclusion. If your emotions are overwhelming the room, you do not have to decide now.

Second: Every advisor gets a voice. No single voice automatically has the answer—not Emotion, not Intuition, not Logic, and not even the Sovereign’s first conclusion.

Third: Agreement is not automatically confirmation. Advisors can influence one another. Ask whether several voices are independently reporting information, or whether they are all responding to the same fear, desire, assumption, or unverified information.

Fourth: Verify what can be verified. You do not have to prove something is false before deciding that you don’t have enough evidence to act as though it is true. If independent verification isn’t available, that is important information too.

And fifth: You are allowed to WAIT. If you are under pressure, emotionally overwhelmed, missing important information, or simply not ready, you do not have to decide. Waiting is a sovereign choice.

The advisors advise. The Sovereign decides.

Importantly: “If you are emotionally compromised or feel pressured to decide, the Council does not have to reach a conclusion. You can choose WAIT.”

The Meditation – The Council of Discernment

Take a moment to settle into a comfortable position.  Allow your body to become still.  Take a slow, gentle breath in…

and release. Again, breathe in…and exhale completely.  There is nowhere you need to go.  Nothing you need to solve right now.  This is a space for listening.  A space for clarity.  A space where all parts of your inner wisdom are welcome.

Before you begin, remember:  You are the sovereign of your own life.  The voices within you are advisors.

They may offer information, perspective, warnings, insights, or questions.  But no advisor makes the decision for you.

You listen.  You consider.  You discern.  And you choose.  Take another slow breath.  As you breathe out, allow the emotional noise of the day to soften.  If you are feeling overwhelmed, frightened, angry, excited, or deeply attached to an outcome, simply notice it.  You do not need to push the feeling away.  Simply recognize:  “My emotions are present, and I can listen without allowing them to make the decision for me.”  Pause here.  Allow yourself to become calm enough to listen.

 Entering the Council of Discernment

Now imagine that you are entering a peaceful inner chamber that is designated as a meeting place for your Council of Discernment.  There is a round table in the center of this chamber with ten chairs.    The Council is a group of ten – that includes 2 attendants and 7 advisors that each have a chair.  There is a place here for every aspect of your wisdom.    Perhaps you experience this space in an entirely different way.  There is no right image.  Allow whatever comes immediately and naturally.  Take a breath.

You walk around the table and sit in the central chair – your chair – the Sovereign chair.

Slightly behind and to the right of your chair is the chair for one of your attendants – your Protector.  Call your Protector into the chamber and visualize what your Protector looks like and its qualities.  You may find your protector is a warrior, a knight, an animal, an angel, a protective spirit guide, or a nature spirit.  Allow yourself to witness the form your Protector takes as a piece of information about yourself.  Your Protector enters the room and sits to your right and slightly behind you.

Your other attendant is the Mirror of Self-Knowledge who reflects to you what you may not be seeing within yourself and it has a chair to your left and slightly behind you.  You call this attendant into the chamber and visualize what this attendant looks like and its qualities.  It may take the form of a magical being, a presence of light, a wise elder, an animal, an angel, a protective spirit guide, or a nature spirit.  Observe this attendant as it takes a seat to your left and slightly behind you.

Now you are going to invite each advisor into the chamber and as they enter and take their seat – visualize, witness, and observe their qualities and the image they present.  You don’t need to understand why they have appeared in this form. Simply notice. Let the image settle into your awareness. Something meaningful may reveal itself now, or it may become meaningful later.  Something important may bubble up from your subconscious here that is important for your self-understanding.

For the next chair on your left you call in your Advisor of Body instincts.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image this advisor displays to you.

For the next chair on your left going around the table you call in the Advisor of Emotions.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.   This colorful chair is powerful, but you can visualize it and the being sitting in it anyway you wish.

For the next chair around the table, you call in the Advisor of Intuition/Inner Wisdom.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.  This feminine chair has an art nouveau style to it, but you can visualize it and the being sitting in it anyway you wish.

For the next chair around the table, you call in the Advisor of Logic.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.  This masculine chair has a geometric design to it, but you can visualize it and the being sitting in it anyway you wish.

For the next chair you call in the Advisor of External information & Verification.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.  This chair symbolically represents factual information/timetables/spreadsheets.

For the next chair you call in the Advisor of Timing.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.  This chair symbolically represents Time and seasonal cycles.

For the final chair around the table you call in the Advisor of Consequences.  Visualize and observe their qualities and the image they present.  This chair symbolically represents the diverging paths or alternate choices that can be created with a decision.

Now all your advisors have taken a seat and you present to them the question or topic of discussion.  Then you will ask each advisor to speak on that topic and report to you what information they have for you.

Advisor of Body Instincts – First, invite the instinctual wisdom of your Body.  Concerning your topic – Ask:  “What is my body telling me about this situation?”  Is this a present-moment response, or could something from the past be influencing it? Notice your breath.  Your stomach.  Your chest.  Your shoulders.  Your heart.  Do you feel expansion?  Contraction?  Ease?  Tension?  Warmth?  Heaviness?  Energy?  There is no need to interpret the sensation yet.  Simply listen.  Your body is offering information.  Thank it.

Advisor of Emotions – Now invite Emotions to speak.  Ask:  “What am I feeling, and what might this feeling be telling me?”  How much might its intensity be affecting my perception?  Allow the emotion to speak without judgment.  Fear may be trying to protect you.  Excitement may be pointing toward possibility.  Grief may be asking to be acknowledged.  Anger may be identifying a boundary that has been crossed.  Love may be revealing what matters deeply to you.  But remember:  An emotion is information. It is not automatically instruction.  Thank Emotion for bringing its message.

Advisor of Intuition /Inner Wisdom- Now invite Intuition to report.  Ask: “What does my deeper knowing perceive? What do I know beneath the noise?  Do not force an answer.  Notice what arises quietly.  Perhaps it is a word.  An image.  A sensation.  A subtle feeling.  Perhaps there is nothing yet.  That is okay.  True discernment does not require you to manufacture an answer.  Simply listen.  Now invite your deeper Inner Wisdom.  Ask: “What do I already know that I may be afraid to acknowledge?  Perhaps something becomes clear.  Perhaps a truth you have been avoiding gently comes forward.  Or perhaps Wisdom says:  “Wait.”  That too is wisdom.  Sometimes the most discerning answer is not yes or no.  Sometimes it is: Not yet.  Thank this advisor for their contribution.

Advisor of Logic – Now invite Logic to report to the council.  Ask:  What are the facts that I actually know?  What does the evidence tell me?  Does this situation make sense?  Are there contradictions?  What am I assuming?  What information is missing?  Are there explanations that need to be examined?  Allow Logic to ask uncomfortable questions.  You do not need to silence it because its questions disturb a desired conclusion.  Thank Logic for its perspective.

Advisor of External Information & Verification – Now invite the part of you that knows when external verification is needed.  Ask:  “What do I need to verify outside of myself before making this decision?”  Is there information you have not checked?  What can actually be checked?  Someone you need to speak with?  Evidence you need to see?  A practical detail that needs confirmation?  Remember:  Discernment does not mean relying only on what you feel internally.

Inner wisdom and external reality can work together.  You are allowed to investigate.  You are allowed to ask questions.

You are allowed to wait for evidence.  Thank this advisor for their additional information.

Advisor of Timing – You now ask Timing to provide its perspective to the Council.  Timing is an active discernment question – Is this the right time to act, wait, ask, investigate, or decide? It can ask:  Is this the right time? – Is something premature? – Is something overdue? – Would waiting provide useful information? – Am I being pressured to decide before I’m ready? – Is there a window of opportunity? – Would acting now create consequences that could be avoided by waiting? – Am I using “waiting” wisely—or simply avoiding a decision? Thank this advisor for its perspective.

Advisor of Consequences – You request Consequences to offer information on the possible paths that will be created by the choices of decisions that could be made.  Where could each possible choice lead? What are the likely outcomes of acting—or not acting?  This is almost like a bird’s eye view of where paths could lead beyond what you perceive in your current viewpoint.  Thank this advisor for the options they present.

The Council Discusses – Now that each advisor has reported to you.  They get a chance to discuss or debate together.  Imagine all of your advisors seated together.  Allow them to speak to one another.  Perhaps Body disagrees with Emotion.  Perhaps Intuition challenges Logic.  Perhaps Logic asks Intuition for more information.  Perhaps Wisdom reminds everyone to slow down.  Let them disagree.  You do not need immediate consensus.  Agreement is not automatically confirmation.  And disagreement does not automatically mean that something is wrong.  Sometimes truth becomes clearer when different perspectives are allowed to challenge one another.  Listen.  Observe.  Breathe.  And notice whether any advisor has been influenced by another.  Has fear taken over Intuition?  Has desire influenced Logic?  Has past experience shaped the Body’s response?  Has excitement made you overlook important information?  Simply notice.  No judgment.  This is discernment.

The Sovereign – Now bring your attention back to the light at the center of the council.  This is you.  Your sovereign awareness.  The Sovereign doesn’t give advice.  The Sovereign listens to the advisors.  The Sovereign can ask one advisor to clarify.  The Sovereign can allow two advisors to challenge one another.  The Sovereign can recognize that an advisor has been “contaminated.”  The Sovereign can ask – What have we not considered?  What question have we not asked? What information, if discovered, could materially change this decision?  And the Sovereign can ultimately say:  “I have heard you all. Now I will choose.” You have listened.  You have allowed every voice to be heard.  You have questioned.  You have observed.  You have considered what is known…and what remains unknown.  Now ask yourself:  “What choice honors my truth, my wellbeing, my values, and my sovereignty?”  Remember that the Council does not require absolute certainty. It seeks sufficient clarity for the decision that is actually being asked.  You may also ask yourself – How important is this decision, and how much certainty does this situation reasonably require?

Take a breath.  You do not need to rush.  Notice what arises when you ask the question.  And if clarity is not here yet, honor that.  You are allowed to say:  “I do not know yet.”  You are allowed to gather more information.  You are allowed to wait.  You are allowed to change your mind when new information appears.  Your sovereignty does not require certainty.  It requires your willingness to remain present and conscious in your choices.

The Protector – not another authority, but the presence that has your back and steps in front of you when a line has been crossed: “Enough. I’ve got you.” If safety, dignity, boundaries, or sovereignty are threatened—or the internal storm becomes overwhelming—he can step forward and say “Enough.”  the Protector remains silent unless something threatens the Sovereign’s ability to discern freely.  That makes the Protector’s voice meaningful.

If the Council becomes heated, the Protector might simply say:  “Pause. The Sovereign needs space.”

If someone is applying pressure:  “No decision is required under pressure.”  If something feels unsafe:

“This requires protection before discernment can continue.”  And if the Sovereign is about to surrender their authority to another advisor:  “Listen to the Council. But remember who chooses.”  I think that could become one of the most powerful moments in the meditation.  The Protector protects the Sovereign’s autonomy rather than making decisions for the Sovereign.  The Protector doesn’t tell the Sovereign what to choose.
The Protector makes sure the Sovereign remains free to choose.

The Mirror of Self-Knowledge may also choose to stand and say “Are you being influenced by fear, desire, past experience, or an assumption that may be distorting your judgment?” or “Remember these values that you hold dear, are you holding to them now?”  Your mirror may also remind you of your best skills and qualities that will serve you now, when you may have not used them to your fullest.

Closing – Now look at what you have heard. Are several advisors arriving at the same conclusion independently? Or might they be responding to the same fear, desire, memory, assumption, or unverified information.  If so, if you remove that underlying assumption, what remains?  Does the information still stand?  You ask your advisors a few final questions:  Am I missing something important?  Please let it be shown now.  What is the one thing I most need to know before I choose?  A conclusion can feel spiritually confirmed, physically confirmed, emotionally compelling, and logically defensible—and still be built on an unverified premise.  If you need to consult your advisors further, do so now. (Pause)

You have listened to your advisors and attendants and you thank them for their courage, wisdom, diligence, and insight in addressing the issue presented to them.  You acknowledge your own ability to listen impartially.  You announce the decision you have reached with confidence with a YES or NO, or WAIT – that you have decided you need more time and examination with the Council to further discuss the information at hand, or that information yet to be obtained for further Council meetings.

Take a deep breath in, gather your awareness back into your body.  As you breathe out, release anything that does not belong to you.  Feel the support beneath you.  Feel your feet.  Your hands.  Your breath.  Your presence.  You are here.  You are grounded.  You are capable of listening deeply without surrendering your authority.  And remember:  Your inner voices may advise you.  Your experiences may inform you.  Your intuition may guide you.  The evidence may clarify.  But ultimately…you are the sovereign of your own discernment.  Take one final breath.  And when you are ready…  open your eyes.

Carry this council with you.  Not as a collection of voices that tells you what to do… but as a sacred practice of listening, questioning, verifying, and choosing.  You know how to listen.  You know how to discern.  You know how to choose.

And you are allowed to trust yourself.
